From the Tang and Song dynasty, famous ink makers, Xi chao and his son Xi Tinggui moved to Shexian County in Huizhou at the end of the South Tang Dynasty (937-975). His method for making ink stick from pine soot was handed down to later generations. Such as the leader of ink stick Cheng Junfang, and Fang Yulu in Ming dynasty till Cao Sugong and Hu Kaiwen of Qing dynasty who carried forward the development of ink stick, created the Tung oil and the Fine black inkstick respectively. Ink stick is mainly divided into soot ink and pine smoke ink. Soot ink gives a warm feeling, pine smoke ink tends to be matte in color. They both create different effects. Other ink sticks include Green ink which shows a purple-blue color, the Cinnabar ink and the five color ink stick.
